Why the holidays don't magically fix burnout

As the school year comes to an end, many parents are hoping for things to become easier - a little more rest, a little more freedom, and time and space for connection.

For some neurodivergent parents and families, the holiday season can feel more draining than restorative - if that sounds like you, gentle reminder that you are NOT alone and it's not because your unprepared or failing.

Here are 4 reasons why the end of year can feel overwhelming:

1. The change in daily rhythm

Many ND parents and children use structure and predictability to support regulation. And while most parents and families look forward to the end of the school year, it can still feel unsettling when that predictable routine ends.

 

2. Kids decompressing

As the year ends, kids may need to unload everything they've been holding in - things like masking, sensory stress, navigating expectations of others, or complex social demands.

Holding space for this can be intense for parents who are usually already exhausted at this time of year.

 

3. The parental load

As December rolls around, ND parents have usually been carrying quite a load - appointments, admin, advocacy, co-regulation support, constant decision making, balancing family needs with working.

It makes sense that parents often feel like they are running on fumes by the time the holidays arrive.

 

4. Increased sensory demands

This time of year can bring more noise, lights, outings and events, more transitions, more time in shared spaces and more unexpected demands - it's no wonder the holiday season can be too much for a nervous system that is already overloaded.

 

And while there is no magical reset button, gentle reminder, you deserve a holiday rhythm that respects your needs. Even small adjustments that respect things like sensory and energy needs, passions and interests can help the summer break feel more restorative.
